The ongoing debate...

What are the top 5 most important positions in football?

We've discussed this many times and it eventually has to be on the blog. I know, you will all disagree with me and I'm interested in what your picks are.

1. Blindside tackle - I'm sticking with this as the most important position because you really can't run an offense without a good blindside tackle. All the stronger teams who make runs deep into the playoffs have great left or right tackles. All Superbowl winners have great blindside tackles.

2. Quarterback - You can win a championship without an above average quarterback, but you can't win one without an above average blindside tackle. That being said, it is definitely crucial to have a quarterback who is able to make quick decisions and execute the offense efficiently.

3. Defensive Tackle - All championship teams can stop the run. You need a good DT to stop the run. Also, good DTs can make life so much easier for linebackers.

4. Offensive Guard - You need an exceptional guard to pave the way for your run game. All great teams have a good run game. It helps you control the clock, dictate the pace of the game, as well as tire the opposing defense.

5. Defensive End - Ya gotta get to the quarterback! Good DEs can make up for a lackluster secondary.

1 comment:

  1. 1) Quarterback - just because you have to look at the awful teams this year with horrible QBs like Cleveland, Carolina, and San Fran...when you keep plugging in different QBs it almost never works out

    2) Offensive Lineman - it is hard for me to decide which one but you need an overall decent line that can sub in decent replacements when OL get hurt. OL get hurt so much that you need a deep line and not just one great guy

    3) Safety - I still don't really know difference between strong and free safety but you look at most good teams they have a team defensive leader at safety (Polamalu, Dawkins w/ Eagles, Bob Sanders when healthy, Darren Sharper w/ Saints, and Rodney Harrison w/ Pats)

    4) Running Backs - I realize that teams recently have won with subpar RBs like Saints, Colts and Packers but without a strong running game it is hard to set up your QB to be successful. You need RBs that don't cough up the ball and can just get you positive yards and break one every so often. But you need that decent overall O Line and late in games to pick up first downs

    5) Linebacker - It's hard for me to say whether it is Defensive End or Linebacker but after seeing so many 3-4 teams at end of playoffs this year linebackers were more crucial than ever. Most corners these days can keep up with the wide outs and always give up some plays except for the extremes like Revis (doesn't allow many passes to his WRs) and Dimitri Patterson who can't cover shit.

I compare all these positions to Eagles of this year...we had outstanding play of QB Vick and RB McCoy but our O Line went down with too many injuries early on and played well when Nate Allen and our linebackers had decent game...But our struggles came when linebackers couldn't cover TEs or get to QB and when our offensive line was just too weak against the rush. And our team just hasn't been the same without B Dawk and that defensive leadership.
